Ranch History
Blue Heron Farms was bought in 1975 as an old almond orchard and was gradually replanted with citrus and walnut trees. But after major losses in 1989 and 1990 due to deep freezes, the owner, Gretchen Ceteras, began tomato production. Each year since Gretchen has increased the tomato plantings as well as hard shelled gourds which grow particularly well in the Yolo climate zone. The citrus, which has now recovered, are known for their exceptional flavor.
Practices
Gretchen's produce is organically grown and fertilized with a bell bean cover crop, pelletized blood meal, oyster shell, bone meal and gypsum.
Pesticides
The farm uses some organic sprays and the help of insects as pest control.
