Celebrating the Rollin’ Root: Looking Back and Moving Ahead

This Saturday, August 9th, the Rollin’ Root is celebrating its 7th anniversary! For the last seven years, the Rollin’ Root has been supporting local farmers and offering affordable, fresh produce to local seniors and low-income communities. The Rollin’ Root staff works hard to provide nutrition education for their customers, including healthy, affordable recipes, information on new produce, and cooking demonstrations.
Last year alone, the Rollin’ Root delivered 148 nutrition lessons, reached 2,065 shoppers through nutrition education programming, and redeemed $50,655 in food assistance through CalFresh, Market Match, and Senior Bonus Bucks. 90% of our customers said they buy produce at least 2 times a month from the Rollin’ Root truck. We are so proud of the Rollin’ Root’s impact on our local communities and its seven years of growth and adaptation across Marin and San Francisco.
It’s no secret that 2025 has been a challenging year for funding. With the passage of the Big, Beautiful Bill, a large portion of the Rollin’ Root’s funding is at-risk for elimination via the cuts to the USDA’s SNAP-Ed program. We are currently awaiting information about the status of future SNAP-Ed funding in California. In light of possible changes, the Rollin’ Root will adjust its operations in the coming months.
But we are choosing to see this change as an opportunity. Over the next few months, we will be conducting an in-depth evaluation of the Rollin’ Root’s business model. AIM is acutely aware that no grant funding is guaranteed, and we are working hard to move away from programming that’s more than 60% grant funded. We want our programs to be viable long-term solutions that our communities can rely on rain or shine, during times of economic abundance and strife.
We see this challenging moment as an opportunity to build resilience and create a version of the Rollin’ Root that will serve the needs of our communities in perpetuity.
